The Gospel of John Session 8 – Chapter 6 Part 2 – Pastor Chris Black

Last week we went through most of chapter 6 where Jesus fed the five thousand men illustrating that he is the Bread that came down from heaven to fill hungry humanity. He then sent the disciples out on the sea of Galilee while he sent the multitudes away. The disciples were caught in a strong windstorm, and he came walking on the water to them. When he got into the boat, he moved it immediately to the other side. The next day the crowd followed him over the sea and found him. Jesus then revealed their true reason for seeking him,

Last week we finished the last half of chapter 5 where Jesus defended himself to the unbelieving Jews who accused him of blasphemy because he claimed God for his Father. Jesus pointed to the fact that he does the same work the Father does including raising and restoring life to the dead. He spoke of both spiritually and physically dead people hearing his voice and receiving life.

Last time we finished chapter 4 and got halfway through chapter 5. We learned about the nobleman’s son that was healed by just a word from Jesus. We also learned about the man that had been lame for 38 years that was healed by the pool of Bethesda on the sabbath day. The Pharisees saw that man carrying his bed and accused him of breaking the sabbath, then when they learned it was Jesus who had healed him they accused him also. Jesus made the statement “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work”. That sent them into a frenzy because he claimed God for his Father, making himself equal with God.

Last time we went through chapter 4 up to verse 42 which delt with the Lord’s encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. We discussed the long and bitter history between the Jews and Samaritans and got a little understanding on why Jesus sent the disciples away and met her alone. Through a short conversation and an open heart, the woman was told by Jesus that he was the Christ. She believed him and went back into the city to testify to that fact. The city came out to meet him and urged him to stay with them, so he spent two days there. Many more believed after hearing him for themselves. Jesus ended that encounter with a message for his

Last week we went through chapter 3 which gives us the account of Nicodemus coming to Jesus at night with questions. Jesus went right to the heart of the matter with this statement “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”. The new birth message was way over Nicodemus’s head. He said, “How can these things be?” Jesus then gives him a sign to look for that would help him understand the mission of Christ. John 3:14-15 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. As the ministry of Christ became more widespread, the disciples of John the Baptist became envious. John explains to them that Jesus is the Son of God, that he came from above and is greater than all, and that John must decrease but Christ must increase.

Song of Solomon Session 4 – Pastor Chris Black

Last we week we went through chapter 3, where the Shulamite recalls a dream she had about her shepherd that prompted her to go look for him in the night. When she finds her beloved, she embraces him and brings him to her mother’s house to meet her family. Solomon then returns to Jerusalem in a great royal parade and astonishes the crowd that is blown away by his majesty.
The beloved Shepherd has followed the court and comes to Jerusalem because the Shulamite is still somewhat captive in Solomon’s pavilions. They speak briefly to each other in this passage.
