To preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, making disciples to advance the Kingdom of God

The Gospel of John – Session 12- Chapter 10

Last week we went through chapter 9 where Jesus healed a mind that was born blind. He healed him in an usual way by anointing his eyes with clay made from spitting in the dirt. He sent him to the pool of Siloam to wash and he came back seeing. The people in his neighborhood were astonished and brought him to the Pharisees. When he told the Pharisees how that Jesus healed him, they refused to believe and were made spiritually blind. Truth has the power to give sight or take it away.

Last week we went through chapter 8 where Jesus was teaching in the temple when the Pharisees brought to trap him a woman taken in the act of adultery. They tried to push the Lord to either offend the law of Moses or the law of Rome. He paid them no attention and wrote on the ground. When they pressed him, he turned the tables on them by saying “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her”. They were convicted by their own consciences and left. Jesus sent the woman away commanding her to “go, and sin no more”. The he turned to the crowd and said

Last week we went through the seventh chapter which was all about Jesus’s time in Jerusalem during the feast of tabernacles week. He went up secretly because there was a plot by the religious leaders to take him into custody and destroy him because he healed a man on the sabbath day. Right in the middle of the week, he went up to the temple to teach openly, and the crowd started a stir over him. When people started believing him and confessing out loud that he was the Christ, the Pharisees sent

Last week we went through the last half of chapter 6. Jesus was explaining to the crowd that he had previously fed the day before, that he was the Bread of Life that came down from heaven. He told them that he was the way to eternal life, through eating his flesh and drinking his blood. They did not understand that this was a spiritual message and choked on it. They got upset and frustrated and went back to walk with him no more. Jesus asked the twelve if they also would go away. Peter answered

The Gospel of John Session 8 – Chapter 6 Part 2 – Pastor Chris Black

Last week we went through most of chapter 6 where Jesus fed the five thousand men illustrating that he is the Bread that came down from heaven to fill hungry humanity. He then sent the disciples out on the sea of Galilee while he sent the multitudes away. The disciples were caught in a strong windstorm, and he came walking on the water to them. When he got into the boat, he moved it immediately to the other side. The next day the crowd followed him over the sea and found him. Jesus then revealed their true reason for seeking him,

Last week we finished the last half of chapter 5 where Jesus defended himself to the unbelieving Jews who accused him of blasphemy because he claimed God for his Father. Jesus pointed to the fact that he does the same work the Father does including raising and restoring life to the dead. He spoke of both spiritually and physically dead people hearing his voice and receiving life.

Last time we finished chapter 4 and got halfway through chapter 5. We learned about the nobleman’s son that was healed by just a word from Jesus. We also learned about the man that had been lame for 38 years that was healed by the pool of Bethesda on the sabbath day. The Pharisees saw that man carrying his bed and accused him of breaking the sabbath, then when they learned it was Jesus who had healed him they accused him also. Jesus made the statement “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work”. That sent them into a frenzy because he claimed God for his Father, making himself equal with God.

Last time we went through chapter 4 up to verse 42 which delt with the Lord’s encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. We discussed the long and bitter history between the Jews and Samaritans and got a little understanding on why Jesus sent the disciples away and met her alone. Through a short conversation and an open heart, the woman was told by Jesus that he was the Christ. She believed him and went back into the city to testify to that fact. The city came out to meet him and urged him to stay with them, so he spent two days there. Many more believed after hearing him for themselves. Jesus ended that encounter with a message for his

Last week we went through chapter 3 which gives us the account of Nicodemus coming to Jesus at night with questions. Jesus went right to the heart of the matter with this statement “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”. The new birth message was way over Nicodemus’s head. He said, “How can these things be?” Jesus then gives him a sign to look for that would help him understand the mission of Christ. John 3:14-15 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. As the ministry of Christ became more widespread, the disciples of John the Baptist became envious. John explains to them that Jesus is the Son of God, that he came from above and is greater than all, and that John must decrease but Christ must increase.

Last time we went through chapter 2 where the first miracle of Jesus is recorded at the marriage of Cana. Mary came to him for help when the wedding party was out of wine and he plainly said that his hour had not come (meaning his time to reveal himself to Israel). Yet he turned water into wine in such a fashion as to answer his mother’s request and still conceal himself to the guests. He also purged the temple of the moneychangers and their livestock that they were using to gouge the people coming for Passover. He turned their tables over and drove them all out with scourge made of small cords. The chapter ends with many in Jerusalem believing in his name, yet he did not commit himself to them because their faith was based on miracles instead of the man.
